Boot Off Iso Located On Dvd

http://www.911cd.net/forums//lofiversion/index.php?t18500.html

I have a number of different ISO's of bootable cdroms with various tools/installers on it. These include WinXP installers in multiple languages, an UBCD, Linux Distro's etc.

Now I am getting a bit sick of dragging them all along. So what I am looking for is - some way to put a number of these (bootable) ISO's on a single DVD, not extracting them, but really put the complete ISO on the DVD. - I would then like to boot from the DVD and be able to select which ISO to actually boot from.

Is there any way to achieve this? I know that it is possible using disk images (on UBCD for instance) but until now I haven't found a way to achieve this with ISO's?

Any suggestions?

Searching for BCDW and/or Cdshell here on the board should give you enough examples to get a start.

Also, it is possible for some images, or if you have enough memory, to use Grub4dos (search for "Grub4dos" on the board in posts by me, jaclaz), this is still experimental.

Well, I did a search for BCDW and ISO and one for CD Shell and ISO. Non gave good results. Could you perhaps point me to a command that is used to load the ISO via CDShell or BCDW?

Sorry maybe I induced you in this misunderstanding, BCDW and or CDshell are just ways to have a menu selection on the bootable DVD, the actual booting must be done by a specific loader, i.e., usually, isolinux/memdisk:

http://syslinux.zytor.com/iso.php http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/multimemdisk/

and/or diskemu: http://www.nu2.nu/diskemu/

and/or bootscriptor: http://www.cdshell.org/bootscriptor/

Here is a post on the UBC4WIN forums with a step by step howto: http://www.ubcd4win.com/forum/index.php?sh…p;mode=threaded

As said, unfortunately, not all .iso's are bootable with the same method, and some are not easily bootable at all, so some experimenting will be necessary.

Well, it is probably me, but I cannot get a RAW ISO to boot from BCDW. I used Memdisk (via Isolinux and Bootscriptor) end tried Emudisk using Bootscriptor.

  • With memdisk it starts to load the image, but runs out of memory while loading.
  • Emudisk tells me the bootimage cannot be larger than 64K.

So I am lost now.

Well, it means that you do not have enough memory (or the .iso image is too large).

If, as I think, the .iso you are trying to boot is a PE image, i.e. something that starts with a SETUPLDR.BIN, you can try the "proper" method for that kind of image, using two files SETUPLDR.BIN and RAMDISK.SY_ from a Server 2003 SP1 or later source, see here: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=17923

or search on the board for "ramdisk.sys", but if your hardware has not enough memory or the .iso file is too big, it won't work.

On the isolinux page there is a reference to this post: http://syslinux.zytor.com/archives/2002-October/001135.html

that should help in booting the .iso image through isolinux (NOT memdisk, thus memory should not be a problem), but I never tried this method, and I am not even sure it will work for something different from Recovery Console.

You may load emulation mode ISO images, e.g. drive fitness test (DFT) http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm That's a 1.44 mb floppy image and addtional files.

Contrary, loading no emulation ISO images may fail. E.g. Knoppix dosn't find Knoppix image.

You can boot an iso image in BCDW only if the iso image contains only the boot image & nothing else. When you burn the iso by itself & you see some files outside of the bootimage it will not work. I have even booted iso images of 32 mb for example acronis all in one boot image.
