Error: Error opening libao oss driver
I have had this problem many a times. I discovered that it is due to another sound daemon already running or due to improper ownership of /dev/dsp so
first, do 'killall -9 artsd' if you are into kde or 'killall -9 esd' or 'killall -9 esdloop'
second, check if you have the ownership of /dev/dsp
in the worst case /dev/dsp might be overwritten as a null device ( it happened when i was playing with mknod ) so check 'file /dev/dsp' and the output should be
/dev/dsp: character special (14/3)
else create it with the command below
mknod /dev/dsp c 14 3
P.S: dont blame mpg321 for all this dont reinstall the app or the entire OS ( one of my classmate was embarassed to the extent that he reinstalled redhat 7.2 )

run "aumix", or check the "Graphics EQ" item on the menu of xmms.

,----- in /usr/share/doc/xmms-1.2.7/README | In output plugin for OSS Driver, in the 'Mixer' tab you can change which | volume setting XMMS should change when you alter the volume from | XMMS. Enable 'Volume controls Master not PCM' if you want XMMS to change | the volume of all sounds instead of only PCM/wave sound. `-----
Enable it then I can adjust sound volumes now.

How's this for a delayed followup? <g>
I guess you have this sorted by now, but since I found this post via the gooja archive, I'd thought I'd add this. Might help somebody.
I was having this very same problem (XMMS volume not working, other than to just shut volume off at the low end of the scale). Also using OSS. (I only have had this problem with XMMS since I've swapped motherboards. This board has built-in AC97 sound, and I've been trying to get that to work as well as I can.)
Finally solved it by going to Preferences (right-click on XMMS and Options -> Preferences, or Ctrl+P). On the Audio I/O Plugins tab (first one that comes up, at least here), clicking on the Configure button under the *Output* Plugin box brings us a dialog, "OSS Driver Configuration". Clicking the Mixer tab here brings up a check box under "Mixer settings": "Volume controls master not pcm".
I checked that, and hey presto! XMMS' volume control works. No more grabbing for aumix or gmix all the time.
Now if I can just find out why…

I'm pretty much a novice, but I found that my life with respect to sound in RH 8.0 got a lot easier when I disabled ARTS from starting in KDE. Instead, I "play" my system event sounds with the 'play' command, and run OSS for XMMS player. That seems to work well.

well, However I play sound, the result is the same. The "Pcm" slider on the mixer does not lower the volume. It just shuts it off once at 0. The master volume works fine and the mute button works as well. The soundcard is recognized fine and everything else works the way it should (as far as I can tell). Just that one channel on the mixer (wich by the way is the same Xmms adjusts when changing the volume there) is oddly enought not working…
I don't know where to look anymore Plz help someone

On RedHat 8.0 changing the volume in kmix or aumix for the "pcm channel" doesn't change the volume at all, it does shut it off once at 0%.
It does this while going through arts or OSS, using xmms or any other player. I'm stopmed, any pointers anyone?

I'm using onboar sound on the ECS motherboard K7S5A wich has a SiS 7012 PCI for sound the system seems to be using the right drivers, I searched the web for this problem and didn't find anything about just one channel on the mixer not working. What I found on this sound chip seems to have been resolved with new kernels and it was always about the sound not working at all.
I've been going nuts trying to find the solution to this one for days without success, does anyone have the same problem? anyone using the same motherboard without a problem? any pointers? hints? help! please?
