I"m using the latest spumux from dvdauthor tarball (0.6.10) to put subtitles from textsubtitles (MicroDVD .sub to be specific) onto a SVCD.
Spumux makes wonderful looking subtitles
I've added the .xml I used as an attachement. The commandline I used looks like this:
spumux -m svcd -P sampleclip.xml < sampleclip.mpg > subbedclip.mpg
<subpictures> <stream> <textsub filename="sampleclip.sub" characterset="ISO8859-1" fontsize="24.0" font="verdana.ttf" horizontal-alignment="default" vertical-alignment="bottom" left-margin="5" right-margin="5" top-margin="5" bottom-margin="75" subtitle-fps="25" movie-fps="25" movie-width="720" movie-height="576" /> </stream> </subpictures>
However, there"s a small problem. Some of the subtitles that appear, the border and filling of the text are completely black!
Is there a way to force spumux to use certain subtitle colors when using a textsubtitle (.sub,.srt and others), or maybe an other way to solve this problem?

:D I could finally get around this problem. I just turned off PBC on my Philips DVD player and now it shows SVCD subtitles. Try it and tell me if it worked for you too.

Instead of SVCD subtitles, try CVD subtitles. More standalone supports CVD subtitles. You DO NOT need to author/re-author your MPEG to the CVD standard to use CVD subtitles (MPEG2 480x480 is fine).
Stay away from Nero, make sure that PBC is enabled in VCDEasy (normally this is what you want but disable if it works for you), and you have to hit the subtitle button on your remote to cycle through the subtitles.

Philips, among a few others, created the SVCD standard which included SVCD stlye subs so its easy to see why they would provide better support for their own style of subs. As far as I know, ALL Phillips DVD players only support SVCD subs or no subs at all, none support CVD style subs. The CVD standard was basically incorporated into the SVCD standard and so CVD style subs are also supported by some players, and in fact CVD style is more widely supported than SVCD style subs, but overall soft encoded subtitle support in SVCDs is very bad. Those relatively few players which support it often have various bugs.
Basically, you will have better luck with CVD style subs than SVCD style unless you own a Philips player. Also I-Author can only create CVD style subs, so if it worked for you in the past, than stick with that style.
All of the previous steps listed to create subs are accurate and that really is all there is to it. In WinSubMux, try setting it to CVD style, if it doesnt work try SVCD style, if it doesnt work than its probably just your dvd player.
I really hate Nero for authoring SVCDs but this is one area where it excels over VCDImager. VCDImager does seem to have some problems with subtitle support. You will actually have better luck with Nero in this regard.

The above selectable subtitle guide link is dead, it's now located at http://members.cox.net/oehrli/sub.html

Enabling pbc in vcdeasy will have the result, that there are no more subtitles visible. It has nothing to do with cvd or real svcd-subtitles. Pbc is the Problem and it seems to be a bog in vcdimager.
In an mail archive i have found the following message:
From: "Koburg Cornelius (SF/ESW) *" <xxxxxxx@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ilgimmy@xxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, November 04, 2002 8:30 AM Subject: OGT Subtitles with VCDImager 0.7.12
I encountered the same problem, that you are mentioning. Subs did not work on my DVD-player (Grundig GDV 130) although the mpeg streams burned with Nero and WinOnCD were showing subtitles. I did a lot of experiments with the source code of VCDImager and finally found out, that locating the files 'tracks.svd' and 'psd.svd' physically at a position just before the mpeg stream resolves the problem - at least with my player. Now I can have subtitles together with a comfortable menu structure! I will sent this result to the author of VCDImager in order to resolve the problem in the next release.
First off to begin with, you will be creating an SVCD with Multiple Audio Tracks and Selectable Subtitles. Why an SVCD ? because VCD's don't have those features or the capability. If your DVD Player supports SVCD's then you should be able to play them perfectly without any glitches, mine does so that is why I decided to use this method that I working my ass off figured out, but in fact it was very simple.
If you don't know what Selectable Subtitles, SVCD, or what an OGM is please read a little bit about it before you begin so you can get the basic concept of how and what your doing.
What is an OGM ? How to play an OGM ?
A very nice free OGM Player that comes with required filters to play OGM's correctly
What is SVCD ? What are the features ? Is it better than VCD ? Can my DVDPlayer play them ?
What are Selectable CVD & SVCD Subtitles ? Can my DVD Player play them ?
Step#1:- Separating the audio from the video using VirtualDubMod. Step#2:- Converting the Audio.
My audio conversion might not be considered the best, BUT their are many guides out their to convert .OGG files to mp2. I used a software called Goldwave.
Step#3:- Converting the Video.
I use TMPGEnc to create the OGM to Mpeg2
Step#4:- Muxing the Audio Streams & Video using BBMpeg.
Step#5:- Creating Subtitles.
Before I begin, I have to explain, that their are 2 types of Subtitles. CVD & SVCD. I'm not going to go into detail about these 2, BUT the link above should be checked if you would like to know. Usually most DVD Players support CVD Subtitles, and mine does too so that is why I prefer using CVD Subtitles.
First load up you .OGM file in VirtualDubMod…
Step#6:- Burning using Nero.
I will suggest to not add the subtitles to stream#0 because they will be their as soon as you start watching the movie, if you know what I mean.
What I do is fill up only streams#2 & 4, that way, when you hit the subtitles the first time, subtitles will be displayed, you hit it again and they will turn off, because stream#3 does't have any subtitles.
I hope u understand what Im am saying, but you can do whatever you like, I like doing that way… :)

This document is aimed specifically at an anime audience (Japanese ` subtitle/English audio). SVCD 1.0 (Philips) is the newer standard to incorporate overlay text & graphics (subtitles, karaoke). The older CVD (China video disc) standard currently enjoys broader support among manufacturers, but is obselete now that China has officially adopted the Philips spec. To help minimize strain on the video I recommend a lower, sub-quality bitrate ` joint-stereo (preserving dolby pro-logic is not a priority now) for the secondary audio stream. This document is still in outline form and may remain so indefinitely. Attention must be given towards the commonplace tasks of subtitle placement, sync correction etc… Nor have i investigated misc details such as the viability of including both SVCD & CVD subtitle streams. As per usual no consideration whatsoever will be given to menu creation as I have no patience for such trivialities
Obtain latest version unless otherwise noted
bbMPEG SubRip WinSubMux MPG2MPS TMPGEnc VCDImager v0.7.12 & up CDRDAO + xDuplicator
WinSubMux SVCD - Ok, CVD - Ok
Add your multiplexed video & subtitles in WinSubMux. Specify a target filename Click SVCD OR CVD per your hardware compatibility then click multiplex Repeat for all subtitle sections
MPG2MPS SVCD - NOk, CVD - Ok
Add your video, audio, subtitles in MPG2MPS and select the options below Repeat for all subtitle sections
Before you bother with this check the DVD player compatibliy chart to your left and ensure that your dvd player even supports soft encoded subs in a SVCD, because most don't.
If your source is a DVD then use subrip to rip all the subtitles to Philips SVCD Designer format. You will get a .sub file, which is just a txt file, and a whole bunch of .bmps. You will have to open the .sub file in any text editor and remove the header info…just the text at the top. Basically you want it to start immediately with your chapter times.
You can then mux the subtitles into your mpg program stream using WinSubMux. Note that it lets you use either the SVCD style subs or CVD style subs. Different styles work better on different players and it appears that CVD style is more widely supported.
If your source is divx, xvid etc… and you have downloaded the separate subtitles for it then you need to use MaestroSBT to convert to WinSubMux format and then use WinSubMux to mux.
Once the subtitles are muxed into the mpg just use VCDEasy as normal to author.

How can I look at a SVCD and check whether subtitles are there? How do I map the subtitle streams to languages? How do I select the language with menus on the screen like it works with the commercial DVDs, or is it a case of just pressing a button on the remote to step through languages on a SVCD as a previous poster implied, and if so, why should it be different.
The problem with people that get it right is that they have trouble understanding the problems of those that get it wrong.
This is the best help I have seen on the net.

I guess I need to wait for a reply before waffling on further.

Which implies that the SVCD subs as authored with VCDImager works on your player with PBC. Have a look on the VCDImager site to see if hvr documented how he made those SVCD samples. Unless I'm wrong, he used WinSubMux…

Dunno, since such svcds are mainly for standalone-players. I don't have one, and for my vdr-machine mpeg4/ogm is more interesting. I surfed around yesterday:
maybe this is interesting for you: ftp://ftp.vcdimager.org/pub/vcdimager/contribs - the package svcd-subtitles.tar.gz seems to provide some information on svcd-subtitles.
In the forum of doom9.org was also a discussion about this. It seems there are 2 types of subtitles. first there are the CVD-type subtitles as I-author does. About CVD Specs there is a article at vcdhelp.com (mainly as I remember 352x576/520 , mpeg2, playable too on some only vcd-able standalone-dvds) The second sort of subtitles are the OGT-subs, these seems to be the standard ones and there seems to be the tool winsubmux, that is able to do that, and the above package(svcd-subtitles.tar.gz) seems to produce OGT-subs.
As I understood the subs are muxed into the mpeg-stream, so mplex should do this. On vcdimager.org and vcdhelp.com are too some samples of svcd with subs. Since I'm not a developer all I can do is to provide infos I find on the net. Hope this is helpful. Too I fear this isn't the right list to discuss all this. Dunno about mplayer-abilities to play svcds with switchable subs …
