Uhg… glxgears is really a pretty poor tool for benchmarking. It's good for making sure ogl is actually working, and for comparing against previous runs I suppose, but that's about it.
For 2D, x11perf is an accepted standard.
For 3D, glperf and viewperf are accepted standards…
