You won't see a `huge list' if you use \cite{*}, just a persistent

LaTeX Warning: Citation `*' on page ... undefined.

Unless, that is, one of the entries in your .bib files is actually labelled `*', but that way madness lies.

\nocite{*} is the correct usage.
