mpg123 -y -w crud.wav crud.mp3
xmms (use the Disk Writer plugin, it's under Output Plugins)
grip (well, it uses mpg123 to do the real work, but….)
There may be others, but these work pretty darn well.

check out mp3burn - a short perlscript that combines cdrecrod and mpg123
available at freshmeat, I'd guess.
