How does Nero's .NRG differ from .ISO?

> I know they differ, but I haven't a clue why Nero decided to make their own
flavor of the standard. Also, as far as I can tell, Nero is incapable of
producing a true .ISO file (not merely a renamed .NRG).
ISO 9660 imaging deals only with data. BIN/CUE is aimed at audio (though
not necessarily restricted to that). The proprietary formats will handle
either.

I am running Windows 2000 with a Yamaha CRW2100E and Nero 5.0. Nero will
still make a *.iso file from a CD program but it is not in the docs that I
could find! If you need to know, here are the steps:
-
Put a data CD into one of your CD drives.
-
Start Nero and then kill the "New Compilation" screen that comes up.
-
Then select "CD-Recorder" from the menu.
-
Now select "Choose Recorder" for the drop down menu.
-
Select "Image Recorder… Virtual Device" and then click "OK". (This
will write the .iso image to your hard drive).
-
Now click the "Creates a New Compilation" button on the button bar.
-
Select the "CD-ROM(ISO)" icon and click the "NEW" button.
-
Drag and Drop the data that you want to turn into a .iso file into the
compilation window.
-
Click on the "Opens the write-CD dialog" button on the button bar.
-
Now click "WRITE".
-
In the "Save Image File" dialog box that comes up change the "Save as
type:" to "All Files(*.*).
-
In the "File name:" box give the file a name with a .iso extension
(i.e. myfile.iso) and save it where you like.
I hope that helps someone out there, because I looked for weeks trying to
find out how to do it and no one could tell me. Good luck.
