An IRC friend of mine downgraded three Etch boxes to Stable. I don't know if this is worth a bug report, but all three boxes errored out while downgrading dpkg.

The error message was:

dpkg: configuration error: unknown option log: Success
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

The way it we circumnavigated was by deleting /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg Afterward, the downgrades went smoothly.
